There's a lot on the web searches plugin in the manual.

It's great when combined with triggers and the current selection proxy object.

I installed The Web Searches plugin which mimicks a lot of what I
already do, but it added thousands of items to the catalog and it
delays things quite a bit.

You can find these in the Catalog, bring up the Info drawer, go to the
Contents, and uncheck the ones you don't care about.

I just think it would be much more elegant to have something like a
"Load text in browser" option which would eliminate the need for the
thousands of shortcuts in the websearches plugin, and streamline the
entire process. Any ideas on how to accomplish something like that?

Not exactly, but I have things working pretty well. If I want to
search YouTube for "cats", I can invoke QS, type:

     tu ⇥ ⇥ cats ↩

or you can go the other way by typing a string and then "find with" a
specific search:

     . cats ⇥ fw ⇥ tu

I'm not sure if this comes to me via the OnmiWeb plugin, the web
searches plugin, or if you need both, but QS automatically makes use
of any custom search "shortcuts" I define in OmniWeb. It's a no
brainer for me, as I use OmniWeb as my main browser, but if that's not for you, I suppose you could download it and set up some searches, but
never run it.

It's not that I think guns, drugs, prostitution, swimming, eating and
reading should be legal. It's just that no one on Earth has the
authority to make them illegal.
