I don't think there's a way to do this.
Why don't you want the address book contacts in the first pane? I find that remarkably useful to start an email to someone or to look up their phone number (bring up the contact and type right-arrow) or to open their entry in Address Book (bring up their contact and type ⇧⌘S to run the first action beginning with S, Show Contact).
As far as cluttering up the results, I find I don't care so much how many results match, as long as what I'm looking for is first or second. I just keep typing until I get there.

i spoke too soon. the problem is documented in this group here: http://groups.google.com/group/blacktree-quicksilver/browse_thread/thread/31e14bb1003f82f1/3f7754614de9ad9f?lnk=gst&q=recent+email+addresses#3f7754614de9ad9f but there is still no convincing way to do this for when i dont want address books to appear global QS list but i want to access them through the third pane. has anyone figured out a way to make a quicklist of custom frequently used contacts?
