I have 623 in mine and it's fine, though it also matters what else is
in your catalog.
If you uncheck the Apple Address Book plugin in the catalog under
Modules, then you get the behavior you're asking for (at least I did
with B54).

Why don't you want the address book contacts in the first pane? I
find
that remarkably useful to start an email to someone or to look up
their phone number (bring up the contact and type right-arrow) or to
open their entry in Address Book (bring up their contact and type
⇧⌘S to run the first action beginning with S, Show Contact).
