If you look in OS X's Keyboard preference pane in System Preferences,
you'll find a keyboard shortcut to put focus on the Dock (⌃F3 by
default). Once the focus is there, if you start typing the name of a
Dock item, it will be selected. Once the Applications stack is
selected, press Space to activate it.
