Things were going ok, then on restart I found a trigger using an URL (not a bookmark but an URL copied into the first pane of the trigger definition) got wiped out. I had to recreate it, but this kind of instability is very frustrating.

Triggers are definately hairy in all the b56 builds. They've gotten
slightly better. I am a completely unsuperstitious person, and am
mostly rational about the way i go about using my computer. Yet when
setting up triggers I've developed a strange, genuflecting, ritual
where I set the trigger, close preferences, open preferences again and
make sure the trigger is still there, relaunch QS (having never
triggered the new trigger yet), open preferences and make sure the
trigger is there, relaunch QS one more time. It seems to work, maybe
95% of the time...

The "(null) Search For...) <?>" you saw, I'm assuming after setting up
a web search. I saw the same after setting up mine as well, but the
label returned to normal and the trigger works. I think that's because
the "null" is looking for the websearch in your catalog and if you've
gone to the triggers pane right after launching QS it hasn't loaded
yet.

The web search plug in works great, but its catalog of web searches
(prefs>>catalog>>modules>>"web searches from docs.blacktree.com") can
be funny. If you're using a web search from that, the icon usually
ends up looking like a blank file, for example. I recommend creating a
new catalog item. If you click and hold the plus sign to create a new
catalog item, you'll see an option for a web search catalog item. In
the sidebar for that item you can enter in your searches. Beyond
fixing the icon, it also slims down your catalog (assuming you've
unchecked "web searches from docs.blacktree.com". Make sure the url of
your search is formatted correct. It's easier to show than explain, a
screen shot:

good luck on your switch. For the most part Snow Leopard plus QS b56a7
is better than Leopard and b54
