I think I may have stumbled on a solution to this problem: 1. Quit QS ß57. 2. Open QS ß54 (the shelf problem will still exist.) 3. Close the Shelf using the shelf window's close button. 4. Quit ß54 and run ß57.
Since doing this two days ago, I have no longer had the problem with the Shelf opening every time I quit an app. I would be interested in knowing if this really is an across-the-board solution with everyone, or if it's just an anomaly with me.
