Thanks Eris! Your script did the trick :)

In fact it seems that's exactly what's happening because I found out
that QuickSilver is 'acting normal' when I run gnome-terminal from
within Apple's Terminal.

I also tried the steps suggested by Sesquipedalian with no luck -
Spotlight shows up normally, while Quicksilver doesn't.

Concerning the terminals part of the discussion, I use gnome-terminal
for only one reason: it seems to be the only terminal (at least the
only one I've tried) that can show me both the cursor line and the
cursor column in vim :p
Thank you for suggesting Dterm and iterm. I wanted to try the latter
but macports gives me a build error :( But I guess I'll find them both
elsewhere on the net.
