I've assigned a keyboard shortcut to search by artist, album and track. When I type in a search, I hit enter on the result, iTunes is activated and is given focus and the track plays. If you're able to do these type of searches without having the OS switch to iTunes, it must be a misconfiguration at my end. I'll take a look when I get home.
