I did some testing and noticed albums, artists and playlist all start in the 
background, but individual tracks activate iTunes. After reading this, I 
checked and sure enough, the first three have Play as default, but tracks have 
Open.

In Quicksilver’s preferences, you can drag actions up or down to alter their 
priority. Just move Play up above Open. This should be safe to do without 
screwing up the Open action for other items like applications and documents. 
(Play doesn’t apply to them and shouldn’t show up.)
