How do I *really* disable checking for updates

In preferences I have "Check for updates" disabled. I manage/image a lot of 
machines that we deploy in the field, so my preference is to handle any 
updates myself. Unfortunately, after booting up a machine, it threw up and 
update screen! WTH? Is there a way to *actually* turn off update checking?
