Deleting the entry for VLC in the plist didn't help. I've also deleted and forced Quicksilver to recreate Actions.plist, but this didn't help either. There seems to be an issue with the way Quicksilver determines the default application for folders, or perhaps VLC has registered itself as a system-wide handler and this somehow overrides Finder. Anyway, I ended up selecting Finder as target for "Always Open Type With…" for folders, which solves the situation (thanks, Rob), which is good enough.
