If you hold the 'alt' (⌥) key when opening iTunes, iPhoto etc. then it
opens them without the default library (try launching iTunes and holding ⌥).
My guess is that you were holding the ⌥ key just too long when iTunes was
launching. If you wanted to use ⌥i, then you could change the trigger
settings to work "on release" instead of "on press" in the sidebar that
pops out.
