If this is true (I don’t want to try it right now either), you may have given us the answer. Something like “TextEdit (Catalog)” generally doesn’t exist until you browse into its parent like “Applications (Catalog)”. When creating these things on the fly in order to display them, I’ll bet it’s using the same identifier as the actual application, but of course, it’s not the application. Doing that clobbers the real entries and replaces them with the “(Catalog)” ones.
