That's still mostly true, except that it no longer uses Mail.app exclusively. 
The plug-in for your chosen e-mail client is now responsible for supplying SMTP 
server details. This allows it to work for those who never use Mail.app. (But 
presently, I think the plug-in for Mail is the only one returning such details. 
This is probably why Patrick suspected the Gmail plug-in was involved.)

Based on the error you're seeing, I'd check the following:

  * Make sure you have the Apple Mail plug-in installed
  * Make sure it's the latest version (3.0.0)
  * Go to Preferences → Handlers and make sure "Email" is set to Mail

It's possible that it just doesn't work on 10.6. I'm not able to test/fix that 
though.

The whole point of the latest E-mail Support plug-in was to do just that. You 
act as though it was working before. My understanding is that it wasn't working 
for anyone as of OS X 10.5.
