I have these same questions. How does QS handle this internally?

Actually I was thinking less of another action like you mentioned in GH 
('Search Contents Recursively') and more of a special arrowing-combo e.g. 
⇧→ to disclose the contents of a hierarchy custom limited in Preferences by 
depth/number-of-files.
I think this would be more QS-like.

Maybe an interim clunky solution could be a trigger made of QS Selection + 
AS action for recursively search performed on whatever folder you're 
navigating in the first pane. I don't know if such could be implemented for 
other QS-objects-in-general.
