I would also recommend the app "contacts sync for Google gmail", available on the mac app store for <$5. It can sync contact *groups* as well as the contacts themselves, if you care about that, and recently added a background sync option as well. It's great if you have an android phone, to get all your contact groups synced between phone and computer.
