And now I'm replying again because I forgot the check the preferences after 
realizing the issue: I disabled 'hide other applications when switching 
applications'.  On one hand I feel I should hide my head in shame for not 
realizing this sooner.  On another I feel so glad that I no longer have to deal 
with this issue.
