If you set the interface to Bezel (the default) and then press your activation trigger, does Quicksilver's interface appear? It should appear in the middle of your screen, and look like this: If that appears, then your basic Quicksilver installation is working. To enter text mode in the first pane, just press the . or ' keys.
The Menu interface works by overlaying a Quicksilver interface on the menu bar. When you activate QS, the menu bar is temporarily covered over and you will see Quicksilver's multiple pane interface presented to you in the form of menu bar sized text fields for you to type into. While QS is active, you won't see the normal menu bar. If you set QS to use the Menu interface, but it doesn't seem to work, try deleting the Menu interface plugin and reinstalling it.
