Hmm… I’m stuck for ideas. Does anything useful show up in Console.app when this happens? Hopefully you have the manual now (from Rob) so fingers crossed you can work some things out. Regarding what’s possible with the Gmail plugin - all it does is constructs a URL for your browser to open. If Gmail has options (query parameters) available as part of the URL, then the plugin can use it. Regarding your problem with new lines - it works fine for me. Check the URL when your browser opens the new Gmail link.
