My workaround will plobary be the best one for you. It builds the old
version, and also keeps the new version too, so that they can live in
unision.
Some older binary packages and KDE 3.5 malfunction if just libjpeg-7 is
installed, or libjpeg-62 is symlinked to libjpeg7.
