Just my few cents.
I haven't installed a single package from xorg fonts in quite some time,
and haven't noticed a single issue. For the record, these are the font
packages I have installed on my system:

As for tigervnc, there's a patch upstream which will allow tigervnc to be
built in combination with xserver-1.19 tarball.
