Now that I can look at that ticket in firefox, yes it _is_ about
openssl-1.1.1. But I think (it had an enormous amount of detail and
possible patches inline) that the tests were failing rather than
hanging.

For me, too, the tests hang with 1.1.1, but I am starting to wonder
if it is a kernel problem. Unusually for me, all my current systems
are running the kernels they were built with (and yes, I know 4.18.8
included a CVE fix for local-user exploits, so I will have to keep an
eye on myself ;)

Snapshot of passes and failures

LFS-8.3, openssl-1.1.0i, linux-4.18.3 ok
LFS-8.3, openssl-1.1.0i, linux-4.18.5 ok
LFS-8.3, openssl-1.1.0i, linux-4.18.9 hangs
LFS-svn, openssl-1.1.1, linux-4.18.9 hangs

Unfortunately, I have not managed to find the Net::SSLeay git tree,
all the links point to alioth which is now defunct.

There is an old tree at github, last commit in May 2012.

Hmm, probably at salsa.debian.org but firefox won't let me access
that (SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER). Got there in falkon, but I can't
see anything useful.

AHH! 1.85 was preparation for a new maintainer, (Radiator
Software), https://metacpan.org/release/RADIATOR/Net-SSLeay-1.86_06

With svn, 1.1.1, 4.18.9 that sails through. Will do some more
testing. <sigh/>
