Excellent question. I vote to keep it simple and put all the complicated stuff in a hint. I have a bootscript which runs alsactl restore and I (almost) never alter /etc/asound.state. People who need anything more complicated are probably capable of working out the issues for themselves. Just my tuppence worth...
