I can start Impress if I select "empty presentation" and "create".

I have applied one extra patch, besides the ones used in your build
instruction, since I had another impress problem with a crash triggered by
selecting a layout. (I did a manual edit of forbiddencharacterstable.cxx).

The patch solved this particular problem for me.
Well, I haven't tried the above patch yet, though judging from what I am
now seeing and the bug report attached to it, this looks like it may
needed. Thanks. It's in my currently running build along with a few
others. My new problem is that the preview in the template wizard for
impress now works (where it had crashed before), but it still crashes at
random in the same manor. After it crashes only once, it returns to the
old behaviour. I was able to complete the wizard once (even at a normal
pace where I browsed through the options) and see my selections in the
full sized presentation window, which then crashed upon clicking on it.
