I've slept since then.  :)

We never came to a conclusion when you brought it up before, but my
comment is really the same.  You were right the first time, of course.

This time, I think I'll just comment out the ungif package and see if we
get any breakage.  There are four packages that reference libungif:
imlib, imlib2, mplayer, and emacs.
