Correct. The config.* files need to be updated to work on other
arches. But it is not only popt that needs to be updated, tons on
packages will need to be updated (similar to what gentoo does). Are we
going to patch all packages?

Gentoo has a nice scheme. They have a package called gnuconfig that
includes these two files. Before running configure on a package they
update the config.{sub,guess} files with the latest from the gnuconfig
package. Perhaps we can have such a note at the begining of the book.
