Looking at the configure script:

MPlayer compilation will use the CFLAGS set by you, but:

    *** ***  DO NOT REPORT BUGS IF IT DOES NOT COMPILE/WORK!  *** ***

It is strongly recommended to let MPlayer choose the correct CFLAGS!
To do so, execute 'CFLAGS= ./configure <options>'

The script does have optimization set to -O4, but there have been no
reports of failure because of it.

Upon review, I am against any of the proposed changes for these and the
reasons mentioned in other posts.
