One test build later, no it isn't. If Gnome VFS can use the kernel inotify directly then Gamin and FAM are superfluous. I can untar something onto my desktop and it shows up straight away. cd into the folder and run configure and if I watch the folder with Nautilus the files jig about as things are created and removed, no need to click Reload.
