That's on purpose. If you follow any of the three techniques for
building X in BLFS, you'll end up with Mesa OpenGL. It's packaged up
with the monolithic Xorg and XFree86.

The MesaLib page says
It is not recomended to build a newer version of Mesa with XFree86 or
Xorg-6.9.0.
That's at file:///alt/home/blfs/blfs-real-src/BOOK-2006-08-21/x/mesalib.html

What exactly does that mean? Presumably it doesn't mean 'not newer than
6.5.0'
(though 6.5.1 has been released!). Newer than whatever comes with the
sources
for XFree86/Xorg-6.9.0 (i.e., meaning "it's not recommended to build it
separately")?
Newer than some unspecified older version?

Not recommended separately if you built either of the monolithic
builds since they package their own versions. The only time you should
be building Mesa on your own is if you're using Xorg-7 or you're an X
hacker. You'd have to mangle up either of the monolithic builds to get
it to work, I think. If you can think of better wording, please
suggest.
