More testing shows that I can set XDG vars to include /usr and /opt/gnome and then both desktops behave perfectly. So, it appears that KDE isn't using the XDG stuff at all, but GNOME does. I wonder now what would happen if I removed all XDG vars? Would GNOME behave normally?
