That doesn't happen automatically.  When we want to create the branch
(not tag), we change all the appropriate entities in general.ent and
manually rebuild the book. I have created a custom script for that in
the past.  At that time I copy the book, patches, and other support
files to a permanent place.   Any updates to these files I've made
'permanent' will have to be made manually.

IMO it doesn't make sense to try to completely automate this.  It
doesn't happen that often and its very hard to think of everything that
can happen in advance.
