That doesn't happen automatically. When we want to create the branch (not tag), we change all the appropriate entities in general.ent and manually rebuild the book. I have created a custom script for that in the past. At that time I copy the book, patches, and other support files to a permanent place. Any updates to these files I've made 'permanent' will have to be made manually. IMO it doesn't make sense to try to completely automate this.
