I've had the same problems with it, I use firefox and after watching a
few videos with it the browser just crashes, it literally crashes, it
doesn't freeze like it does sometimes with flash. I'm running mplayer
1.0rc1, I used to grab it from svn but the code is too unreliable to
be 'simply used', it's best to use a stable release.
I never looked much into the problem, I just stopped using the plugin,
though I'm sure I could fire it up again and run a few tests.
