Dan, I created a ticket for this, and can knock it out right now.
Let me know, though, as you may be already working on it.

Changes I see happening are using 'libdir=/lib', moving the .la
files to /usr/lib, using readlink to create the .so symlinks in
/usr/lib, then deleting the .so files in /lib.

I've not tested, and am just thinking out loud, but it appears
these changes would work and are very simple.
