Yes it does need openssl (Gnutls can be used also, but is untested by me).
In a sense Openssl is a de-facto package in BLFS, its so important package
(in my opinion) that if a reconstruction happens in LFS, it certainly has
its place in a base Linux system.
What if I move it to recommended dependencies? Does this solves the
dilemma? Same goes for links and the choice to use Berkeleydb as
backend.
I mean, what's the point to offer broken or incomplete (default)
instructions - I really don't want to do that - and I am explaining my
points one by one:

- In this case, almost all of the Imap servers offers a secure
layer (popular gmail service for example), so we can propagandize
it because its a good practice and should be encouraged. We want secure
networks, don't we?

- In this case of links, is useless in text-mode (See the
discussion in the track for details)[1].
So we need to find a solution or a workaround at the worst case, before
moving such a good working package to the wiki.

- I am repeating mostly myself here from the starting post.
Mutt developers recommends for use either qdbm or gdbm.
Keep in mind that there were (some) reports when using db as a
backend.
But in that case I can be little more flexible and I can enable
hcaching by default and use the Berkeleydb as a backend and we can watch
the support list. If we will receive report(s) then we can change to gdbm.
Is that okey?
