 Short answer : I don't know.

Longer answer - I thought it was unnecessary, but the one system
that I've built without it (also upgraded to cups-1.3.6, and on ppc)
can't print the cups test page (the start is feint and partly offset
on a second line, then it just feeds the paper through). That's why
I said the specific versions work on x86!

I had to change the printer recently (couldn't get the old epson ink
cartridges any more, I won't print photos with third-party ink), and I
suspect an issue in gutenprint although none of the available versions
worked when I tested on ppc, but a recent posting elsewhere made me
think foomatic might somehow be necessary. I've just started a build
on x86_64, so I should know later this week.

Longer term, I might just get a very long usb cable and connect the
printer to the server ;)
