Thanks.  I sort figured out the problem.  I was building on a fairly old 
LFS so there are lots of libraries that are, shall we say, less than the 
latest.

I went over to another system and tried again.  I had to build cairomm, 
  glibmm, gtkmm, and pangomm for c++ interfaces, but then gparted built 
and came up without problem.  Everything was CMMI except gparted itself 
where I just had to add --disable-doc because I don't have 
gnome-doc-utils installed.
