Thanks for the response.  I don't think the kernel driver is calling a 
shared library, but the existing userspace drivers may not  recognize 
the kernel driver and then are trying to fall back to the *pcm_empty.so 
module.

I reinstalled alsa-1.0.11 and at least have sound back.  Eventually I'll 
need to do a full rebuild on this system, but that's time consuming - 
even though it needs it.
