This is because
  - it contain as primary 'sources' as generated files
  - almost every utility use static linkage
  - almost every utility build begin 'from scratch', i.e.
    build 'own' tangle, web, cweb, kpathea, etc..
  - texlive tarball encapsulate almost all software you
    have already (gzip, libz, unzip, libpng, gs, ... just why gcc,
    glibc and linux kernel not here yet?)
