I know. On my x86_64 system with usb keyboard and mouse, the same setup works fine without any xorg.conf. The problem seems to be mostly around the ps2 keyboard on the 686 system, although the evdev driver is not being loaded for the mouse. Looking at the drivers, I see that we don't download or build xf86-input-keyboard-1.6.1 or xf86-input-mouse-1.7.2.
