Sounds reasonable. In my own /usr/share/pixmaps I have
directories (exo-1, gnumeric, goffice, gvolwheel) and files (mostly
from gnumeric, repeating what is in the directory and not hard
linked), but also a png from ufraw [ not in the book ] and xpm
files from xine and xscreensaver.
