Basically, pax is not really needed, except for passing the LSB tests. OTOH, it is a nice utility, which can read and write both cpio and tar formats. It lacks the xz compressed format, though. I would say that it does not hurt to have it in the book (and that it is a low and easy maintenance package). I am ready to commit, but will wait for others advice.
