Thanks to you all for commenting. By "almost a hard dependency for xf86-video-ati" you mean "if building for every radeon". The xorg drivers have always been "special" in BLFS (a presumption that people might build them all, because that was how old non-modular X used to be), so I think I'll go along with that. It might take me a few days to commit anything for this, I'm planning to start to change my drives tomorrow (for each of the pair: fail, remove and replace, use a gpt partition, add, sync : and then grow it, with a further resync). ĸen -- Nanny Ogg usually went to bed early.
