I'm probably too close to it. I guess that adding a command
explanation for tar -C would not be amiss (Armin reminded me of it),
but what else ?

I don't think I have changed the content of this since I started
touching TeX. Certainly, all I am doing here is moving it to a
separate page to make it easier to link to from the alternative
routes. I don't use extrapaths.sh, my bash profile and bashrc
go back years and are quite different from the book, so I would not
notice if things were being added twice.

Almost - if xindy and asy are not needed. I have assumed people
will want to build the full package, so although asy has to be
separately configured and built, it is only covered in the next
section -

I can add a note to the path page for people who do not require asy
and xindy. [ People who merely do not require xindy can hopefully
work out for themselves how to build it in pass 1 : because of my
inexperience in using TeX I have been running all the tests to gain
a little confidence - there are not many other packages where I do
that ]

I'm sure that for some of this there are other possible ways to
build, but what I'm now doing does not require binaries and appears
to work.
