Yes, gucharmap is optional in Mint Mate, but mate-character-map is not
in the repository. However, it installs without any other dependency:

gucharmap (1:3.10.1-0ubuntu2)
libgucharmap-2-90-7 (1:3.10.1-0ubuntu2)

That is one option I was thinking: DE from mate, mixed with some
applications from gnome, if we want it and there is not an equivalent in
Mate.

Me too. Only when a browser is not configured or something like that, I
am surprised by a file manager or an archive manager, such as file
roller (Gnome) or engrampa (Mate), suddenly appearing.

Bad news is that Mate has also converted to systemd religion [1], so I
cannot be sure if the experiment will be successful.
