Hi,
I'm writing to -dev, because I am not sure that everybody interested is
monitoring -book. The main "issue" about this driver is that the kernels 4.1
and above have an improved manager for th VMware mouse, so that:
- xf86-input-vmmouse is not needed at all with those kernels. I've tested
under qemu and VMware.
- older versions of this driver conflict with those new kernels. This means
that if you have a new kernel, you must have the new driver (but you don't
need it...).
At a moment, I was inclined to remove the xf86-input-vmmouse driver completely
from the book, because of the above, but there are two reasons to keep it:
- obviously, not everybody is using a newer kernel yet.
- less obviously, to use the kernel VMmouse driver, a few non trivial options
have to be set in the kernel configuration.
So now I propose to keep the driver, and to add a paragraph telling that this
driver is not needed with newer kernel and giving the relevant kernel options.
I agree. I'd also add that we should change to lfs77_built instead of
checked. When we get to 7.8 (freeze will be in about a month), we will
not be able to check it.
