To check it, you just need a kernel before 4.1. Don't you have a spare one?
I've tested with 4.0.3 and 4.1 both in qemu and VMware-player. It is not that
long. You just have to build the driver, and reboot to the needed kernel.
Well, I have been slow with installing and using the VMware machine, but this
is not relevant here.

BTW, the sed seems to not be needed anymore. The patch is not needed with
newer versions, as Armin noted in the patch header.
