I looked at pcre2 a couple of months ago, when I discovered that pcre was in maintenance mode. My impression - and I might well be mistaken - was that _none_ of the released packages which use pcre was ready to use pcre2. The real test is to build pcre2 without pcre, and see if it gets picked up by anything. Hopefully, somebody will now jump in and say that packages a, b, and c will use pcre2 if it is present, and packages x, y, and z can use it with patches or configure switches.
