Should we consider updating pcre to pcre2? See http://www.pcre.org/
I was recently testing a pre-release version of grep and a test for jitpcre
failed. It appears that pcre2 is needed. We build grep in LFS without
pcre.
I looked at pcre2 a couple of months ago, when I discovered that
pcre was in maintenance mode. My impression - and I might well be
mistaken - was that _none_ of the released packages which use pcre
was ready to use pcre2.
The real test is to build pcre2 without pcre, and see if it gets
picked up by anything.
Hopefully, somebody will now jump in and say that packages a, b, and
c will use pcre2 if it is present, and packages x, y, and z can use
it with patches or configure switches. Well, I can dream ;-)
I now think it's not ready for us. I solved the problem I had without
pcre2. A torture test in a grep pre-release failed when linked against
pcre, but I was able to get it to pass by increasing the stack limit to
32000 (or unlimited).
