Gave it a second go with stuff that was definitely 44.1/16, saved a project as 'project' in the current directory. Closed brasero, then ran it again - opening the 'project' : at this time, it seemed to create brasero.cue and then write it - and reported a successful write. But I discovered that the CD from xfburn was still in the drive. With a fresh CD it again reports a successful write, and this time I can play it.
