I'm still a long way from changing the kernel on the SandyBridge i3,
but on the haswell i7 I've built 4.7.0 with that change: the
version of vlc in the book now plays my DVD without any problems.

No change to xine (cannot open the DVD) nor parole (gstreamer
backend error - that is now an old gstreamer) but 1 out of 3 is a
lot better than 0 out of 3.
